Boxing fans were delighted to see the return to the ring of Mike Tyson a few weeks back, and it looks as though legendary fighters returning to the ring is a trend that is set to continue into 2021. It was officially announced on Sunday night that Floyd Mayweather will be lacing up his gloves once more in an exhibition fight against YouTuber Logan Paul.
The YouTuber has made a habit out of calling out Mayweather over the past 12 months, but he has now been granted his wish, as he will come up against one of the fighters that many consider to be the best of all-time in February.
Boxing News: Mayweather’s First Fight In Two Years
It was a shock announcement for fight fans, as nobody could believe it that Mayweather would actually accept the challenge from his opponent that has only fought on one professional occasion. Many already believe that Paul has bitten off more than he can chew with this challenge, as Mayweather is revered in the ring. He retired professionally with a perfect 50-0 record, and has won The Ring’s award for Fighter of The Year on two occasions. During his esteemed career, he was a lineal champion across five different weights, and dominated in the ring unlike any other boxer has before.
However, there is no question that this will be a huge money fight, as no fighter gains the attention on PPV like the American. Mayweather was last in the ring in December 2018 as he beat Tenshin Nasukawa by TKO. However, it was the fight against Conor McGregor that was his last professional fight, as he beat the UFC legend in the tenth round of their mega-money bout.
Boxing News: Experts Question The Fight
The fight hasn’t been warmly received by everyone within the industry, as expert Gareth A Davies has questioned whether taking this fight will damage the legacy that Mayweather has fought so hard to build. It isn’t hard to see the points behind the argument, as he will be taking on an opponent that hasn’t won in two previous fights.
Paul lost on his professional debut to fellow YouTuber KSI back in November last year, as the Brit was given the win by split decision. The same stars also played out a draw in an exhibition fight before that. There is no doubt that there will be interest in the fight, but there doesn’t seem to be much question which fighter will be winning this one.
