‘The Mercenary’ Flip Gordon is done just running the worst twitter account in the industry, and is back to doing what he does slightly well, and that’s wrestling. He’s going to be challenging for the Pure Title at Final Battle, but there’s just one catch… he’s never even wrestled a Pure Rules match before.
Tonight, he faces one of the men who will define this division to come, a man who beat Jay Lethal recently, Josh Woods. Should Woods win, maybe the match at Final Battle will be altered accordingly.
Josh Woods Is The Better Pure Wrestler
Code of Honor would be adhered too, and this Pure Rules match began with Woods taking control with ease. Gordon tried to use his high flying, and ended up caught in an ankle lock, losing rope break #1 in less than thirty seconds. He’d try some mat wrestling, and be outclassed by Woods who remained calm, collected and focused.
Gordon has finally found a pace that worked for this match, but Woods easily outwrestled him and almost forced another rope break. Instead, Gordon remained calm and worked through the counters to keep his headlock on Woods. Some forearm rubbing along the face of Wood would just irritate, before Gordon got this match moving.
A big dropkick would be hit, Woods would tumble to the outside and be hit by a dive and sent to the inside for a near fall as we go to a commercial break. Gordon maintained control on the mat as we came back, showing his hidden skill-set. He was finally showing that he can go hold for hold with Woods, but he’d make a mistake by throwing blows with Woods and pissing him off.
Flip Gordon Shows His Skills
Gordon kept the pressure on with a knee strike in the corner followed by a front suplex drop onto the top rope. A diving dropkick was a smart move here, and Gordon got back in control on the mat. Woods would finally power up and just pick Gordon up and take him to the rope. This forced a rope break for Gordon, Woods showing his experience in this match type.
He’d follow up on a frustrated Gordon with some running strikes and a suplex before a running knee strike in the corner. The double underhook suplex would be countered into an impressive moonsault samoan drop, before Gordon went up to the top rope and was quickly cut off.
Woods would throw body shots and an elbow strike before nailing the superplex. Gordon was on the ropes as Woods threw blows. A kick to the gut leveled Gordon for the Doctor Bomb. This only got two, but Woods went for a submission and Gordon blocked. Gordon slipped to the outside and hit a shoulder to the midsection, went through the legs, rolled Woods into the middle of the ring for a spin kick.
Gordon went high for a beautiful moonsault, nailing it and getting a two count. A front suplex into a curbstomp got the win, with Gordon notching his first ever Pure Rules win.
Woods wrestled the style better, but Gordon got the win here tonight. Can he beat Gresham at Final Battle? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
