There was a huge tease put out on social media this week, as Ryan Garcia admitted that his ‘dream’ has come true as he is set to take on boxing legend Manny Pacquiao. The post immediately caught the attention of fight fans around the world, as it means that there could be a possibility of seeing Pacquiao step into the ring with one of the brightest up and coming stars in the sport. But, could the teaser by the American actually become reality?
Boxing News: Could It Happen?
There would certainly be money to be made if the fight is made official, as there is no denying that both fighters have millions of fans around the world. However, there are still some that have disputed whether the fight could happen, as Pacquiao fights in a weight classification two higher than Garcia. The post was largely met with positive responses, but some were disappointed, and claimed that the American was undeserving of facing the legendary boxer. Others claimed that he should be focused on fighting the Filipino, and should instead be looking to set a date with Gervonta Davis.
There have been talks about the two fighters squaring off for months, with Davis being one of the most dominant fighters in the lightweight division. He is the reigning WBA lightweight holder, and has an impressive 95.8% knockout record during his professional career. Both fighters are still young though, which means that there wouldn’t likely be a huge backlash on Garcia taking a fight against one of his heroes, at least there shouldn’t.
Boxing News: Experience Could Be Key
The difference in experience between the two fighters is staggering, as Garcia has fought on just 21 occasions since turning professional in 2016. His last fight came on the 2nd January, as he beat Luke Campbell by TKO in the seventh round in Texas. That was the fifth straight fight that Garcia had won inside the distance, but he would have to improve immeasurably if he was to square off against Pacquiao next.
Pacquiao won the first of his world titles when Garcia was just over one-year-old, but he has showcased over the last two years that he still has enough in the tank to continue going for at least a couple more years. The Filipino last fought in July 2019, as he won the WBA welterweight title by split decision against Keith Thurman. That was the 71st professional fight of his career, but could his 72nd be against Garcia?
