At the start of 2020, this was looking like the year of Marty Scurll. He had just signed the highest value contract in Ring Of Honor history, making “Main roster WWE money”. Scurll was set to be one of their top stars, likely the ROH Champion before long, while also taking some control behind the scenes as a booker. He was making some serious moves, despite not joining All Elite Wrestling like his old pals in the Elite.
However, fate didn’t want this for Scurll. After being mentioned as part of the #SpeakingOut movement, his empire crumbled. His story in that movement was that he took sexual advantage of a drunk 16 year old, when he was 27 years old. He simply replied he thought the encounter was consensual, but understood that it’s part of a bigger issue in the wrestling community. This made him bad news for ROH, and they have now parted ways.
Ring Of Honor Bluntly Announces That Marty Scurll Has Left The Company
In a tweet that offers very little speculation, Ring Of Honor announces that Scurll is gone. It simply said “Marty Scurll and Ring of Honor have mutually decided to part ways.” He’s gone, his contract is done, and has to move on and see if anyone else will take him.
If it wasn’t for him being a sexual predator, he would have just become the hottest free agent in the wrestling world. Scurll was considered one of the finest technicians in the world, and his matches with the likes of Will Ospreay will stand the test of time as classics. However, he’s now a risky pick up for anyone. The moment any major company touches him, the bad news will come up and make them think twice, especially where he has admitted to his crimes.
There very well might not be a spot for someone like Scurll in professional wrestling now, and that is for the best. We have other great wrestlers without the baggage of Scurll, but he made his bed, and now has to lay in it. At the very least, he helped bring Brody King to a high level before being exposed, so he left ROH with something amazing there. King was a key member of Villain Enterprises, a faction headed by Scurll.
