Sometimes, you don’t know who will thrive in the WWE system, and who will flop. When Punishment Martinez joined WWE after four largely unimpressive years in Ring Of Honor and took the name Damien Priest? No one expected much of him. This was a good observation, until 2020.
He kicked off the year in a Fatal Four Way match for Number One contendership of the NXT North American Championship, and started to turn some heads. Soon after, big matches with Keith Lee & Finn Balor made him one of the most popular men on the roster. He’d become and lose the NXT North American Championship in a feud with Johnny Gargano, before being dropped by Karrion Kross.
Priest has hit his ceiling in NXT, and it might be time for him to go to a bigger stage. With Royal Rumble looming, is it time for Damien Priest to join RAW or Smackdown?
Damien Priest Was To Debut On Smackdown, But Idea Was Scrapped
One week ago, we might have been talking about what would be next for Damien Priest after a big Smackdown Live debut. He was set up after a big brawl with Karrion Kross to leave the brand without a final match, and ready to move to Smackdown. Priest would have been there to help provide back-up for Kevin Owens, a man he had no history with.
That lack of history was why his debut was scrapped, perhaps for the best. We would get an insanely good match on NXT between him and Kross, perhaps both mens best match in WWE yet. Priest was able to get a proper send-off, and a chance to start his main roster journey off much smoother.
The Royal Rumble Is The Perfect Spotlight
Despite this year potentially being one of the weirdest Royal Rumble matches of all time, due to a lack of a crowd, that doesn’t mean we won’t get a fun match full of surprises. Priest might not be a big shocker, but he’s a man who will catch some eyes when his music hits. It won’t be hard to see him connecting with fans on either RAW or Smackdown, and the Royal Rumble is a great place to make your debut and find an early rival.
Many names like Priest are overdue for a move away from NXT, to open spots for more talent to establish themselves. We can hopefully expect to see others leave NXT at the Royal Rumble, and really give the main roster a shakeup.
Will Damien Priest achieve his goal of living forever with a huge Royal Rumble debut? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
