After weeks of being tormented and mocked by Britt Baker and Reba, Thunder Rosa went to Tony Khan to get this grudge match set up for tonight. Rosa is a former NWA Women’s Champion, and has taken the AEW Women’s Champion to her limits as well. Baker will either be no issue for her, or this will be her breakout performance in this first time singles match.
Thunder Rosa Wastes Zero Time
Baker came to the ring with a serious expression, not ready to host a silly talk show, ready to kick some ass instead. She knows Rosa is no joke, and Rosa proved this by not wasting any time and rushing the ring. Rosa went for Reba to take her out of the ring, and almost took the Lockjaw earlier after taking her eyes off Baker.
Baker would be hit with a low dropkick, and have an armbar applied before she reached the ropes. Some heavy strikes in the corner from both ladies was followed up with Baker rolling through a snapmare to apply a crossface chickenwing, Rosa able to fight free. Baker took refuge in the corner before taking a running dropkick and a flipping senton from Rosa.
Rosa applied a cravate, and Baker fought to the corner to force a break. Baker dodged a splash into the corner, before bending the leg of Rosa in the rope and kicked her in the head. When Baker gets vicious, she does it so well, bending the shoulder around the steel post from the outside. Baker would break the count of the referee to keep brawling with Rosa outside, before being driven into the apron and hit with some uppercuts.
Rosa used the steel ring post to attack the hand of Baker, trying to take the Lockjaw away. Some big elbow strikes from Baker showed that the damage was done. Finally back in the ring, Baker was able to apply a cravate and nail some knee strikes to the face of Rosa, before hitting some lazy boots to the head and a fast swinging neckbreaker.
Britt Baker Gets Aid From Reba
Baker would take Rosa out to the ramp, hit a curb stomp and got for the swinging neckbreaker again, but was countered into a Death Valley Driver. Rosa followed up with a running lariat in the corner, and a slingshot dropkick. Baker took a basement dropkick soon after, before getting rolled up for a two count. Rosa took a slingblade into superkick combo, and Baker got another two count.
Baker narrowly avoided the Fire Thunder Driver, and was able to set up and nail the Air Raid Crash for a near fall. Reba gave Baker the glove for the Lockjaw, but Rosa fought to the bottom rope with her leg. Baker hit the running curb stomp, and went into a pinfall before looking for Lockjaw. Rosa fought into a pinfall, and was able to break the Lockjaw set up with a back suplex.
Another Death Valley Driver in the middle of the ring got a two count, and Rosa applied an armbar. The referee was distracted, and Reba removed a turnbuckle pad before being run off. Reba let Baker know, and Baker used it for a facebuster before applying Lockjaw to an unconscious Rosa. This one was a submission win, but could count as a referee stoppage.
When the AEW Women’s division is given time to have a match on Dynamite, they are proven to steal the show. This was a great example, between two of their very best. Rosa is a complete package, and Baker gets better with each and every match. Match Rating: 4/5 (****)
