Tonight was to be a major night for the AEW Women’s division, as they took center stage on a special hosted on big time sports website, Bleacher Report. It was to be headlined by the American semi-finals match between Riho & Thunder Rosa in the AEW Women’s World Championship Tournament, while also featuring the Japanese Finals between Ryo Mizunami & Yuka Sakazaki. This event was to be free for all to watch, no matter the country. However, when the show began, this was not the case, but All Elite Wrestling (AEW) owner Tony Khan took quick action.
From the moment the show began, fans outside of the United States started to realize they would have great difficulty accessing this event. As such, they took to Twitter and it became clear this was a more widespread issue. Even in Canada, a VPN was needed to properly view this show. This goes against the promise of BleacherReport that this show would be free for anyone to watch live.
Tony Khan Angry At Bleacher Report After Failing To Deliver
Tony Khan would catch wind of this, and quickly set up a YouTube stream for fans to catch these matches on. He’d say the following on Twitter.
“I’m sorry people had issues with Bleacher Report’s international stream. I was promised multiple times by our partner that the Eliminator matches would stream in real time for free for all international fans. Since that’s not the case, I’ve just put the matches up for free on YouTube.
Here’s a YouTube link for the Women’s World Title Eliminator matches also streaming tonight domestically on Bleacher Report. International fans I’m sorry for the confusion. We had several meetings re: this Sunday Special, BR had promised to stream overseas”
It remains currently unclear if this was a lie from Bleacher Report, technical issues, or what the issue exactly was. However, at the end of the day quick action from Tony Khan once again helped him build some trust with AEW fans. These tournament matches should have been on AEW Dynamite to begin with, but at least in the end everyone had the chance to watch the matches as intended.
