There was a dramatic night of MMA action last weekend, as UFC Fight Night saw two dramatic finishes in the top two fights on the card. Cory Sandhagen delivered one of the best knockouts that we have seen in recent years to inflict a ninth professional defeat on Frankie Edgar in the opening round of their contest.
Meanwhile, Alexander Volkov delivered a stunning knockout win to overcome the stern challenge of veteran Alistair Overeem in the second round of their fight. There promises to be more thrills and spills as the UFC action continues this weekend with UFC 258 taking place at the UFC APEX.
UFC News: Usman Kicks Off Busy UFC Schedule
There is something for everyone in the UFC over the next six weeks, as there are a huge number of exciting bouts and title defences to look forward to. The action gets underway on Saturday night, as Kamaru Usman defends his welterweight title against Gilbert Burns. Few can dispute the dominance that the Nigerian Nightmare has achieved throughout his career, as he has won 17 of his 18 professional MMA fights. His record is even more staggering when you realise that his only defeat came in his second ever fight against Jose Cacares in May 2013.
Since then, his dominance has been clear for all to see. His first fight in UFC came back in July 2015, before then beating Leon Edwards on his first UFC main card later in the year. Usman has beaten just about every top class welterweight that is out there, as he holds wins against Rafael dos Anjos, Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley. His most recent title defence came in July last year, when he beat Jorge Masvidal by unanimous decision.
UFC News: Gilbert Clear Contender
This won’t be a straightforward evenings work for Usman though, as he will be coming up against a challenger that is rightfully considered the number two in the welterweight rankings. He is a three-time world champion, and has progressed excellently since arriving in UFC in 2014.
After a sticky start to his career in UFC, which saw him beaten by Michel Prazeres and Dan Hooker, he has been able to find some solid form over the past two years or so. Wins against Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley last year show that he is ready for this fight against the undisputed best welterweight in the UFC at present. It will be captivating to see how the fight plays out.
