Claressa Shields has made a reputation for herself at creating history at any given opportunity, and she will be looking to do that once again on Friday night as she squares off against Marie-Eve DiCaire in a bid to unify four different divisions. It could be a moment in boxing history between the two women on Friday night, and fans will already be aware that it would be a dangerous game to bet against the two-time Olympic champion.
The fighters squared off for the final time before their contest on Friday evening in the press conference, where Shields claimed that ‘98%’ of men would struggle to deal with her in the ring, and who would we be to argue against that?
Boxing News: Shields Looking For More History
The 25-year-old is no stranger to creating history, and will be looking to make boxing history once again on Friday night in just her eleventh professional fight. Before Shields burst onto the scene, no fighter had ever won two Olympic gold medals, but she did in 2012 and 2016 at the London and Rio Games respectively. Since turning professional, the trail blazer has continued to break every glass ceiling that was ever in the sport, and won titles at three different weight classifications.
She won the WBC and IBF super middleweight titles in just her fourth professional bout, as she beat Nikki Adler by TKO in the fifth round, before she was able to add the WBA and IBF middleweight titles to her ever-growing collection in June 2018 with a win against Hanna Gabriel. Shields then added the WBC middleweight title following a victory over Hannah Rankin.
Boxing News: Tough Challenge Awaits
Since that win against Rankin, she has managed to defend the middleweight titles against Femke Hermans and Christina Hammer. However, she added the lightweight WBC and WBO titles to her collection in January last year, as he beat Ivana Habazin by unanimous decision. Friday will present an opportunity to add the IBF, WBA (Super) and The Ring titles to her collection.
DiCaire will present a formidable opponent tonight though, as the Canadian also has a perfect record as a professional. All 17 of her wins have come by decision, and she has been the IBF title holds since victory over Chris Namus. She has since defended the title on three occasions, but this will be her first fight since November 2019 when she beat Ogleidis Suarez.
