Boxing is a sport that is all about rivalries, and one that could be resumed after a back-and-forth on social media this week could be that of Vasyl Lomachenko and American WBC title holder Devin Haney.
The Ukrainian fighter reacted strongly when being questioned why he hasn’t returned to the ring since defeat last year, which could potentially open the door to a showdown between the two talented fighters.
Boxing News: Lomachenko Admits That He Is Waiting
In the brief exchange, the Ukrainian fighter, who still is considered as one of the pound-for-pound bests in the world admitted that he was waiting for the title holders in his division to make a decision about who they want to fight next. Haney could be one of the opponents that the Ukrainian could face, but Lomachenko revealed that he was looking for a ‘real’ fight and not one that is fought over social media.
The Ukrainian was beaten in shock circumstances back in October last year, as he dropped the WBA (Super), WBO and Ring titles after a decision defeat against Teofimo Lopez. That defeat was only the second that he has suffered during his professional career, and left many experts around the world shocked by the outcome. However, there is a strong impression that there could be a re-match between the two before the end of the year, as the Ukrainian looks to win his titles back.
Boxing News: Could Lomachenko Face Haney?
The lightweight division is certainly the most competitive it has been in years, and that means competition for fights is at an all-time high. Lomachenko remains the biggest star in the division, but that has been questioned following the emergence of Lopez, as well as Geronva Davis and Ryan Garcia. The Ukrainian alluded to the fact that Haney hasn’t fought any fighter of significant standing during their exchange, but that could soon change as the mandatory challenger for his title is now Garcia.
Haney has also called Davis for a big fight, and now he has added Lomachenko into the mix for good measure. Haney’s record is certainly impressive as he has won all 25 fights throughout his career, but he is yet to challenge any one of the standing of the fighters that he is calling out. His last fight came back in November, as he edged to a unanimous decision victory against Yuriorkis Gamboa.
