One of the most eagerly-anticipated events of the year in boxing takes place this weekend, as Dillian Whyte looks to avenge the stunning defeat that he suffered at the hands of Alexander Povetkin.
The two heavyweights clashed back in August, with the British heavyweight being knocked out in the fifth round of the contest in London. The fight moves to Gibraltar this time around, as the ‘Rumble on the Rock’ takes place on Saturday evening. But, will history repeat itself or will Whyte avenge the stunning defeat?
Boxing News: Whyte Searching For Revenge
Few would have foreseen the outcome that we saw back in August, as Whyte laying back down looking up at the sky after a fifth round stoppage certainly wasn’t in the script. Whyte had been in electric form going into the first fight, as he had won his last eleven following a TKO defeat against Anthony Joshua. A win over Povetkin back in August would have put him firmly at the front of the queue for a title challenge as soon as one presented itself.
While, Deontay Wilder was also looking at Whyte for a shot back in the title picture. The defeat didn’t see his stock crash completely, as there is no denying that his rise from the ashes following the defeat against Joshua wasn’t going to be completely undone with one defeat. However, another loss this weekend would leave Whyte questioning where he could possibly go next.
Boxing News: Povetkin Looking For Repeat
Povetkin was the massive outsider to get the win in the first fight between the heavyweights. However, his performance back in August will ensure that the bookies odds will be much tighter this time around. Povetkin’s dominance in the first fight was hard to foresee, but that is the gameplan that he will once again be adopting when the two meet on the rock on Saturday.
Povetkin’s power certainly caused no end of problems for Whyte in their previous encounter, which means that Whyte may look to adopt different tactics this time around. However, the Brit only knows one way of fighting and that is getting into an outright war with his opponent. Whyte’s power looked to be missing back in August, and how he weighs for the rematch could be potentially more telling than anything else this weekend.
