After last night’s glorified squash match where Kenny Omega hit Rich Swann with 11 V Triggers to win the Impact World Championship, rumors of AEW buying Impact Wrestling are circulating once again.
It’s nothing new as fans have been bantering about this idea since AEW and Impact first started working together to help build each other up.
It’s always a possibility, as it’s believed Impact Wrestling operates on a lower-than shoestring budget and the influx of cash from AEW would be greatly appreciated.
And that may be true, and after Kenny Omega showed he was the superior wrestler in a dominating performance last night, it gives legs to the rumor once again.
Rich Swann fought the fight of his life tonight at #IMPACTRebellion – but Kenny Omega is the new @IMPACTWRESTLING Champion.
I trust/expect Mr Omega will honor the commitments & responsibilities that come with that prestigious title.

Why not?
Last night’s match reminded us of the WWE Invasion angle where WCW and ECW wrestlers couldn’t win clean and had to cheat to do so over WWE talent.
It was Vince McMahon’s way of showing the WWE was superior.
And watching Omega dismantle Swann definitely made Omega look like the best in the world.
Adding to that is Impact has long been considered the cockroach of professional wrestling as they refuse to die no matter what happens, and that kind of battle-tested mindset could prove a valuable addition to AEW.
It would also give AEW their second televised show, even if it’s on a regular cable channel like AEW Dynamite.
On the surface it looks like it’d be a great deal for everyone involved, so it makes sense, right?
Too different
While wrestling is wrestling, each company has slightly different ways of doing things.
AEW is a spot fest with decent in ring storytelling. Impact is more of a balance between old and new school, relying on time tested moves as well as some spot fests to move the story along.
Because of that, Impact’s not what many current fans consider fun television.
It is what it is, and there’s no shame in that as everyone has different tastes.
But it’s doubtful Impact would give up their independence, especially when it’s been rumored that AEW sought them out for this partnership and not the other way around.
Whether that’s true or not is debatable as it’s a rumor, but if true it shows Impact wasn’t and may not be interested in selling.
The biggest reason may be simply that it’s what both companies had to do to help survive and gain viewers.
Impact Wrestling has gained more by far in this partnership, but it’s also gotten them in the news during a time when the WWE dominates the landscape.
Could this lead to something more? Time will tell.
Are the renewed rumors of AEW buying Impact Wrestling legitimate or just fans’ wishful thinking? Let us know in the comments below.
