We’ve only seen one match between Hangman Page & Brian Cage in AEW, where Cage got a surprising win after refusing to let Page get any momentum. Tonight, we get the rematch. Page has called Cage out on relying on Team Taz, and Cage agreed that he doesn’t need them. This is a good ol’ fashioned grudge match, and should be another hard hitting brawl.
The Crowd Wants To See Some Cowboy Shit…
You could barely hear Jim Ross as Hangman Page hit the ring, and he’d get right into it with some boots to the face of Cage with some ‘Cowboy Shit’ chants. Cage would stop him and look for a pumphandle facebuster but Page countered and hit a sliding lariat. Page sent him outside, before Cage yanked him outside and drove him into the barricade.
Cage took his eye off Page and took a suicide dive, but caught the diving plancha. Page was lifted into a powerbomb, and thrown into the steel ring post. A weakened Page was sent back into the ring, where Cage booted him in the face. Page tried to fight back but took a swift jumping knee strike to the jaw.
Cage chucked Page across the ring with a heavy irish whip, before picking him up for the Bicep Curl Fallaway Slam, but Page countered into a crucifix bomb for a two count. A clash of lariats saw Cage win out, before Page went for a second and it was the Cactus variety, sending both men to the outside. Page followed up with a moonsault off the post to the ground.
And Hangman Page Gave The People What The Wanted
Back in the ring, Cage stopped Page on the top rope, before Page nailed a hurricanrana off the top rope. Cage would block an attempt at the Buckshot Lariat with a superkick before trying to suplex Page back into the ring. Page slipped out and nailed a rolling elbow to the jaw, ringing the bell of Cage.
An attempt at Deadeye was set up, but Cage countered out and hit a one arm neckbreaker for a near fall. Page would block a German Suplex attempt, only to walk into a flapjack onto the top rope. Cage would slip to the outside, and decide to suplex Page onto the entrance ramp, doing heavy damage to both men.
Page was set up for a top rope F-5, and it connected but a lazy cover from Cage led to a two count. Cage would set up a buckshot lariat of his own, but couldn’t connect before Page hit an F-5 of his own. Page would look to show him how the Buckshot is done, before being dropped with a German Suplex and a powerbomb.
A flurry of offense from Cage ending in a Spiral Bomb for a two count. Starks & Hook came to ringside to help Cage, but he refused. He’d regret this as Page nailed the Buckshot Lariat for the win.
The AEW crowd practically worships Hangman Page, and this match showed exactly why. It was a hard hitting spot-fest, with a great story told of Cage proving that he doesn’t need Team Taz, and they’re actually holding him back. A damn fine grudge match from two of AEW’s best. Match Rating: 3.75/5 (*** 3/4)
