Last night was the end of an era for Smackdown Live. Since it’s rebranding back in 2016, Daniel Bryan has been an important piece of the puzzle. From his time as Smackdown Live GM and host of Talking Smack, to his return from retirement and rise to the status of WWE Champion once again, it all took place on Smackdown Live.
Last night, Roman Reigns choked him out to win his latest defense of the WWE Universal Championship, and the extra stipulation was that if Daniel Bryan lost, he was done on Smackdown. A con-chairto would follow, and Daniel Bryan would be left a broken man to end his Smackdown career.
While it’s expected he will be out of action for a few weeks to sell this defeat, his next path seems clear to fans and talent alike. Is Daniel Bryan about to make a major run into WWE NXT?
Some Fresh Matches And A New Environment For Daniel Bryan
After seeming burnt out following the Wrestlemania 37 main event, Daniel Bryan hasn’t been quiet about his passion for professional wrestling starting to dwindle. This is a man who fought like hell for years to get back in the ring, now wondering if he still belongs. It’s a rough situation to see, but there’s a solution in WWE for him.
Finn Balor was in a similar spot just a few years ago, and heading down to NXT put him on one of the best runs of his career. NXT is a place where wrestling truly takes focus, and that might be exactly what Daniel Bryan needs. It’s a change of scenery, and a place where one of the best professional wrestlers in the world today can truly show that he’s still among the top names in the world today.
Fans and talent alike seem to want this, with one notable name calling for Bryan being NXT North American Champion Johnny Gargano. Gargano posted a picture from one of his two meetings with Gargano in Absolute Intense Wrestling, an Ohio based indy promotion. In 2009 & 2010 they had two long singles matches, and Gargano simply captioned the image “It’s been awhile..”
Checking Some Matches Of His Dream Match List
Johnny Gargano isn’t the only top opponent waiting for Daniel Bryan down in NXT. Bryan has been very clear in the past about wanting to wrestle names like Pete Dunne, WALTER, Trent Seven, Tyler Bate and more. Add in a longer feud with Adam Cole, matches with Finn Balor & Kyle O’Reilly, and perhaps even a run as NXT Champion?
There is a lot for NXT to offer Bryan, even if it’s only a short run. Reports seem to indicate that Bryan’s current WWE contract ends later this year in September. After that, he might choose to leave WWE and wrestle part time around the world, or sign a deal with All Elite Wrestling. But in the meantime, Bryan won’t want to be shelved, and NXT has the matches on his dream match list.
