This story is still developing, but after William Regal’s announcement that change is needed last night, many have speculated that Samoa Joe would be signed to NXT as General Manager.
It appears those speculations were correct as it’s been reported that Samoa Joe has signed with WWE NXT in a Non Wrestling role, which leads us to believe he’ll be taking over for William Regal.
Joe was a surprise release recently, and plenty of speculation flew that the WWE is releasing talent to sign them back at a cheaper rate, meaning cost cutting.
It’s something we see in sports regularly, though it’s rare given there are usually salary cap penalties and such.
More to this story
Dave Meltzer recently said on Wrestling Observer Radio (Special thanks to @LeakedWrestling for the transcript) that:
“I think that’s the cue for Samoa Joe. I don’t know that 100%. I was told today that Samoa Joe was gonna be in a Regal-like role, then all of a sudden Regal’s talking like he’s stepping down, so maybe the Regal-like role is Regal’s role. But if he’s leaving, based on what I was told, Samoa Joe was definitely the favorite to be the new Commissioner. But Joe is in, and he’s in as a non-wrestler, so I think that tells you that he’s not cleared.”
This comes on the heels of reports that Samoa Joe was seen at the Performance Center, and it makes sense for him to be there for any contract negotiations, to get the feel of things, and go over storylines he’s involved in.
If this is legitimate, it’s going to be a fun ride with Joe running NXT. If people thought Regal was tough, things are going to escalate pretty quickly.
On a personal note, we’re disappointed this means we won’t see Joe in the ring any time soon, if ever again, but his health is the main priority.
In the end, he’s got to do what he feels is best for himself and his family, and we’re wish him all the best. We’re just excited to have him back on TV again as he was one of the bright spots on WWE Raw.
This is going to be a fun ride, so we’re buckling up now and grabbing some snacks. Let the rule of Joe begin!
