It’s time for perhaps WWE’s most overlooked show, that being 205 Live. In recent weeks, we’ve seen a resurgence with this brand and some new names added to the mix. Tonight, Asher Hale & Ari Sterling team up to take on the gatekeepers of the brand in Ariya Daivari & Tony Nese, while debuting Grayson Waller takes on Sunil Singh in our opening contest. Waller is the former Matty Wahlberg, a recent signee from Australia who is coming into WWE with high hopes.
Grayson Waller Impresses In His Debut
Waller started off with an open palm shot to the face of Singh, before showing his agility by leapfrogging and cartwheeling over his opponent. Singh hit a spinning wheel kick and looked for a rear waist lock, before Waller rushed the ropes and had Singh meet them throat first. A big leg lariat dropped Singh, before he got a triangle choke on the ropes.
Waller would slip out of the ring but quickly jump back in through the bottom and middle ropes. Singh was hit with a big boot, before Waller hit a scoop slam. A neck crank would be applied, with Waller raking at the eyes of Singh as well. Singh was able to get free before being flung into the corner.
He’d dodge a stinger splash and gain some ground, and hit some axe handles off the top rope. Waller would fight back and hit a quick standing curbstomp for the win. Sunil Singh was off his game and hurt his arm early on, leading to a quick loss to the “21st Century Success Story”, Grayson Waller.
A simple debut squash match for Grayson Waller. This match showed him as a heel who is as confident as he is talented, and if this is a sign of things to come, WWE has a star on their hands. Nothing much of note in this match for a high rating, but a match that accomplished its goal. Match Rating: 1/5 (*)
Asher Hale & Ari Sterling Need To Get Along
Hale would start with Nese, and get shoved into the corner. Nese allowed a clean break and Hale went for a single leg takedown. A rope break blocked the attempt and Hale allowed a clean break before Hale ignored a tag request from Sterling. He’d go for a Crossface Chickenwing on Nese but go for a roll up instead.
Nese would slip out of the ring to clear his head before locking back up with Hale and being taken back down. Hale tagged in Sterling with a chop, and Sterling lost the wrist lock instantly, allowing Nese to make the tag to the dismay of Hale. Daivari got control of Sterling’s wrist, before Sterling used his agility to break free.
Sterling was driven into the corner by Daivari, and beaten down by both opponents. Nese was legal and took a hurricanrana, before being sent outside. Hale & Sterling would hit tandem dives to the outside, some decent teamwork, but Hale didn’t want the fistbump afterwards.
Nese would be taken to the mat back in the ring by Hale once again, but Daivari helped him set up a springboard moonsault in their corner. Hale has been the dominant one in this match, but now found himself in trouble.
Tony Nese & Ariya Daivari Have Hit Their Tag Team Stride
Hale would be looking for a tag as Daivari had the heel hooked, but Sterling couldn’t reach. Nese tagged in and took Hale down with a back elbow before applying a body scissor hold. He’d wiggle to his corner and allow Daivari to tag in and keep the pressure going. Hale avoided a Persian Splash and got a snap powerslam, and tagged Sterling in.
Sterling took Nese down with a spinning heel kick, before a back elbow and a leg sweep set up the front flip kick to the back of the neck for a two count. Nese would block a suplex attempt, but was caught with a pele kick for another near fall. A chop to the throat caught Sterling, but Hale was right there for a tag. Hale would take out both Nese & Daivari with a Tornado DDT to Nese where he kicked off Daivari.
It got a two count before Hale moved into a crossface with a seamless transition. Daivari would save his partner before being sent outside by Sterling, but Nese stopped Sterling with a dropkick before he could dive over the top rope. Hale went for a roll up, but Nese rolled through into a spin kick. Daivari went for a uranage onto the knees of Nese, before going for the Hammerlock Lariat.
Hale dodged the lariat and hit a roundhouse kick for a two count, before Nese got involved and sent to the outside. Daivari was set up on the corner by Hale, and Sterling got a blind tag. He’d launch off the back of Hale to take Daivari with a hurricanrana. Hale called for a double team move, but got stuck on the top rope as Sterling was taken out and was taken down for a combination cutter by Nese & Daivari for the win.
205 Live often gives way to great tag team wrestling despite not having a proper division, and this was no exception. Hale & Sterling played the rivals turned allies trope well, as Nese & Daivari gave their all as veterans of the brand. The first half of the match was a bit slow, but built up to a rapid pace at the end. Match Rating: 3.75/5 (*** 3/4)
