Kyle O’Reilly & Adam Cole will meet at Great American Bash, but first need to get through separate singles matches. O’Reilly was quick to choose his singles match for this week, but Cole wouldn’t reveal his pick for a tune up match. Cole is one of the top names in NXT, and this open challenge could either see him pick a rookie to abuse, or call out another top name for a proper challenge.
Carmello Hayes Calls Back To Early John Cena
Cole would grab the microphone and reference all the injustices he faced last week. William Regal set up a match with Kyle O’Reilly, Samoa Joe choked him out, and then he learned he had to wrestle this week. However, Cole refused to dance for Joe & Regal. That would change when Carmelo Hayes would come out and introduce himself.
He’d call back to John Cena’s debut and yell for some RUTHLESS AGGRESSION, before slapping the taste out of the mouth of Cole. Hayes would take Cole down with a springboard lariat, sending Cole to the outside for a dive. Back in the ring, Cole would catch Hayes with a quick kick before slowing the pace down with a picture perfect snap suplex. Cole followed up with a simple neckbreaker, also done to perfection; before choking Hayes on the bottom rope.
Hayes took a superkick to the knee but blocked to follow up before nailing a Chinchecker and a lariat for a two count. Cole would retake control as he sent him to the outside, before throwing him into the barricade. Throughout the picture in picture break, Cole would maintain control of the match in the ring with some hard irish whips and a side headlock.
Adam Cole Isn’t Someone To Make Your Name Against
As we came back to full screen, Hayes tried to get back into the fight only to take a back elbow to the face. He’d take a moment to catch his breath outside, and nailed a pump kick to the side of Coles face back in the ring before countering a suplex into a cutter for a two count.
Hayes would nail an enziguri and codebreaker for the two count. By this point, the crowd was 50/50, despite starting the match with some “Who are you?” chants towards Hayes. Cole would nail the backstabber for a two count, before setting up Panama Sunrise only to take a superkick. Hayes went for a springboard but took a superkick from Cole, who nailed Panama Sunrise to claim the win.
This was a fantastic performance for Carmelo Hayes, who won over the Capitol Wrestling Center crowd despite facing one of the favorites in NXT with Adam Cole. Cole was always going to win, but it’s matches like these that get a star making NXT career running. Match Rating: 3.25/5 (*** 1/4)
