This past Wednesday on the special episode of AEW Dynamite, Fyter Fest Night Two, we saw two championship matches. While in the main event, Jon Moxley lost his IWGP United States Championship to Lance Archer, Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D was able to notch her first defense of the AEW World Women’s Championship. However, during her match with Nyla Rose, she potentially encountered something that could stop her reign early, as she suffered an injury.
Britt Baker Defended the AEW World Women’s Championship With A Broken Freakin’ Wrist
This news comes right from the source, as Britt Baker revealed the injury on Twitter. After the show, she was hanging out with bare knuckle fighter Paige VanZant, and had the following to say. “…And oh yeah, I retained the title on Wednesday night at AEW Dynamite with a broken wrist. Not taking any time off either.”
This would help to explain the sloppy nature of the match with Nyla Rose, if Baker had suffered a wrist injury during the match. Many fans were unsatisfied with both the match and the build, making it a less than ideal start to Bakers reign. It’s unclear where in the match the injury would have been suffered.
This is the second time she was injured in a match Nyla Rose was involved in, after Baker suffered a knee injury on the May 5th, 2020 episode of Dynamite following a spot where opponent Kris Statlander threw Rose onto her, causing the injury.
Keeping Her Out Of Action Until Pittsburgh?
With Baker seemingly ready to keep going despite the injury, AEW might look to delay her next match to give her time to heal. A benefit Baker has over previous AEW World Women’s Champion Hikaru Shida, is that she is a great talker. You can put her in the ring for promos on the build to her next match, keeping her in the public eye without risking the injury getting worse.
AEW has an upcoming show in her hometown of Pittsburgh (or Brittsburgh if you will), which comes on August 11th. This show will also coincide with the debut taping of AEW Rampage, which is a major deal for AEW. Keeping Baker out of the ring until then, and doing a major rematch with either Hikaru Shida or Thunder Rosa would make a natural main event for either Dynamite or the first episode of Rampage.
This is a rocky start to the reign of Baker, but provided she can heal up, things still look promising. She is easily the most popular female on the roster right now with crowds, and truly feels like the face of the division. Do you think Bakers reign will be cut short due to injury?
