UFC Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski isn’t impressed by Colby Covington. The Welterweight contender lashed out at Volkanovski and his fellow Featherweight coach Brian Ortega, calling the pair “midgets”.
The Australian champion, quarantining in a Sydney hotel, had a simple response:“Stop crying and get yourself a fight!”
“Stop crying and get yourself a fight!” – Volkanovski CLAPS BACK at Covington
The new season of The Ultimate Fighter features Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski and Brian Ortega. Each man leads a team of MMA athletes hoping to achieve a UFC contract awarded at the end of the show. The team captains themselves will fight for the Featherweight title in either August or September this year.
The slugger from Wollongong has quite a bit of time on his hands in hotel quarantine. As a result, he’s been trading insults with Colby Covington. Covington is deploying his best heel strategy, throwing barbs at other fighters while avoiding the Octagon:
“Yeah, they’re decent fighters for the little weights, for the little midgets, but they don’t sell.” “There’s no controversy, there’s no drama, there’s nothing. There’s no storyline. I feel bad for the show.”
What does Volkanovski think about that? While the Australian avoids trash talk as a general rule, he rarely minces words. Colby Covington’s digs about the Featherweights’ heights got under his skin enough to warrant a response:
“The guy needs to stop crying and get himself into a title fight,” he said. “Don’t cry like a baby because you didn’t get this opportunity.” “Suck it up and get into training”
But the Australian didn’t stop there, going straight for the jugular and attacking Covington’s media persona:
“He can say what he wants about me. At least I’m real. Colby Covington literally plays a character to stay relevant, but nobody cares about him.”
“Right now, he’s sitting on the sidelines, waiting for a title shot to be given to him. Nobody is talking about him and he’s got the s**ts about that.”
Having “the s**ts” is Australian slang for throwing a childish tantrum. Volkanovski clearly has little respect for Colby Covington, who has his sights set on Kamaru Usman’s Welterweight title. Covington’s Trump-loving troll persona made the fighter a star, but it seems that his fellow athletes are increasingly tired of his antics.
What are your predictions for The Return of the Ultimate Fighter? Do you think they will spill over into Volkanovski’s title defence this year? Can Volkanovski – whose defeat of Max Holloway last year was controversial to say the least – hold on to the title?
