Earlier today at NJPW Summer Struggle, the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship reign of El Desperado pushed onward as he faced and defeated former champion Taiji Ishimori. It was an excellent match as expected, and helped to further prove that Desperado belongs at the top of the division. Following the match, before Desperado could address the crowd, he’d be interrupted by his next challenger, a man fan’s have not seen since 2020.
Robbie Eagles Is Back In NJPW, And He Wants A Title Shot
It would be “The Sniper Of The Sky” Robbie Eagles who would show up on the big screen. He’d congratulate Desperado for the win, and compare the division to a pack of vultures jumping over each other for title shots. Meanwhile, Eagles has been waiting, and now realizes that won’t work. He’s going to push his way to the front of the line, and become the next challenger. The other vultures are gone, and now Desperado will need to deal with a different bird of prey.
It was a solid return promo and one part that was very clear is Eagles is next in line for a shot. This is the first we’ve seen of Eagles in NJPW since his run the 2020 Best of The Super Junior tournament, which saw him impress in matches and gain eight points by the end. It wasn’t enough to make the finals, but lasting twenty six minutes with Hiromu Takahashi and taking then IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Taiji Ishimori to his limits showed Eagles has the potential to become champion.
El Desperado Will Walk Into Tokyo Dome As Champion
This match will likely happen at the upcoming Tokyo Dome show later this month on July 25th. It will be the first time Desperado enters the legendary arena as a singles champion, and will be the first time Eagles will have challenged for the championship. There is history to be made on both sides of this equation, and under the bright lights of the Tokyo Dome, they could be ready to put on an absolute wrestling clinic.
It’s unlikely that Eagles will walk away with the win against Desperado in this match, with this feeling more like a proving ground match than anything else. Eagles will prove that he belongs in such a high profile match, and we will see how his career in NJPW moves forward from that point onward. But on the other hand, anything can happen after the bell rings.
