What is arguably the most important date in professional wrestling history is celebrating 25 years, and This Moment in Wrestling History is one many of us will never forget.
We all know the history of Hulk Hogan turning on WCW and joining Scott Hall and Kevin Nash to form the New World Order (nWo).
With today being the 25th anniversary of that moment, we thought it’d be fun to give it an another shout out, with Hulk Hogan’s take this time.
The plan
Special thanks to @awrestlinghistorian for the excerpt.
“It was a six-man tag team match with #RandySavage, #Sting, and #LexLuger against Nash, Hall, and a partner they hadn’t named yet. Hall and Nash fought two against three until the end of the match. They had already taken Lex Luger off on a stretcher and Randy Savage was basically in there fighting all by himself.
“All of a sudden, I came walking down the ramp and everybody expected me to come to Randy’s aid. But instead, I turned on Randy and helped Hall and Nash beat him. I told my fans I had done it all for the money. That night I joined with Hall and Nash and said, ‘This is the future of wrestling…’ We called ourselves the nWo, the New World Order.
“Then I tagged Hollywood on the front of Hulk Hogan to give myself that bad guy flair. I told the fans that I didn’t need the wrestling business, that I could make movies if I wanted and leave wrestling behind. I told them I had made sixteen motion pictures—which was true—and that I had bodyslammed the movie industry the same way I had bodyslammed the wrestling world.
“Of course, I didn’t mention that I only had cameos in eight of those movies and that the rest were low-budget films. It didn’t matter. All that mattered was that we got the fans’ attention and made the nWo the hottest thing going.” – Hollywood Hulk Hogan book
A new era
The nWo took the wrestling world by storm, dominating like no other faction in professional wrestling.
While it’s ending was a whimper once the WWE tried their hand at running it, brought Hogan back for the fans and proved he’s a true icon in the business.
This was a moment we may never see again as it’s next to impossible to keep things like this secret.
Nowadays, kayfabe is all but dead thanks to social media, so surprises like this won’t have the same impact as they did then with a few exceptions here and there.
This Day in Wrestling History will continue to resonate with fans and rightfully so. It was a wild ride and one we hope to see happen again at some point.
