Colby Covington isn’t about to let a little thing like his absence from the cage since defeating Tyron Woodley stop him from sharing his thoughts on the rest of the UFC roster. Covington is leaning harder than ever into his Trump-loving heel persona, hoping that with enough attention he’ll get a rematch with Kamaru Usman and a shot at the Welterweight title.
Colby took his most recent opportunity to stay in the headlines when he trashed Jon Jones and his attempt to move up to the Heavyweight division, stating that the former champion is “done” without “the right juice”:
Covington TRASHES Jon Jones – “he’s DONE!”
“He’s done, he doesn’t have the right scientist, the right juice to do it anymore. He knows he’s done.”
Covington argues that Jones only wants a big enough payday that he won’t have to fight any more, and without the steroids he was once suspended from the UFC for using, he lacks the ability to do so.
Jones’ ongoing negotiations with the UFC have been making headlines all year, with the star publicly aiming for a fight against Heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. Whether Jones can put on enough mass to step into the Octagon with the hardest puncher in the world is another story, but the beleaguered former champ remains (at least outwardly) steadfast in his pursuit of another shot at the title.
Jones uploaded a photo of his new, larger physique to social media recently, having added noticeable bulk to his intimidating frame. A stronger, heavier Jon Jones would be a frightening prospect if he can maintain his mobility and speed.
Jon Jones was, at one point, one of the UFC’s greatest fighters, with a whopping fourteen title wins to his name. Jones’ only professional loss came via a controversial disqualification against Matt Hamill. Jones put Hamill on the ground and followed up with a series of devastating elbows, the last of which the referee deemed to be an illegal downward strike.
Jones might be more famous for his activities outside the Octagon, including testing positive for both cocaine and steroids, UFC suspensions, and even a hit-and-run accident in which he crashed into a pregnant woman and ran from the scene. Jones remains a controversial figure in the UFC, an organization that is no stranger to controversy itself.
Colby Covington’s jabs against Jones are more than likely just another example of the fighter’s trolling persona. Maybe Jon Jones does realise that he has fewer years in the UFC ahead of him than behind him, and recognises the need for a big payday before he retires. Or maybe Colby Covington is just running his mouth so he can stay in Dana White’s vision long enough to get a shot at Usman’s Welterweight title.
Do you think Covington is right about Jon Jones, or is he talking trash? Should he get another shot at Kamaru Usman, who is shaping up to be one of the UFC’s most dominant champions?
