Miesha “Cupcake” Tate returned to the UFC in stunning form his weekend, stopping Marion Reneau in the third round of Tate’s comeback fight. Her five-year absence from the Octagon revealed minimal ring rust, and instead an improved fighter revealed herself before the world.
Any concerns about Tate’s athleticism proved unfounded. She declared her return and her ambitions for the second phase of her career.
Miesha Tate: “They can all get it”
In the post-fight press conference, Tate was forthright with her evaluation of the fight and her future in the UFC. When asked about who her next opponent might be, particularly if she was interested in a rematch with Holly Holm, Tate’s reply was as short and sweet as her nickname:
“They’re all fair game. They can all get it, respectfully.” She elaborated:
“I expected them to come out of the woodwork, so that’s great. I think a fight with Holly a second time would be great.
There’s a lot of women in the division, so name em all. I don’t know where I’ll come in at the rankings now, I’m never one to say I deserve this or that, I got to continue to climb.
But whoever’s name is on that list to get to the top, that’s fine with me. And I’m sure Holly and I, I have no doubt about it, before I retire, her and I will fight again.”
A rematch between Tate and Holm is no doubt enticing for the UFC, as the two veterans of the women’s division remain among the most popular female fighters in the UFC stable. Tate’s initial title win came against Holly Holm, who shot to fame when she dispatched Ronda Rousey with a head kick.
Rousey, of course, was then the golden child of the UFC’s women’s division, but following the defeat Rousey quickly left MMA for the bright lights of professional wrestling.
Before any of that, however, Miesha Tate is going to enjoy her return. “I think I want to let this victory settle. I don’t want to be in a rush for anything. “But of course I am a woman on a mission here, so I do want to get to the top.
I think a fight by the end of the year is reasonable. Now, I’m going to go home, kiss my babies, enjoy this hard earned victory. And in the next few weeks we’ll regroup, talk to UFC and get something lined up.”
