The mastermind behind NXT, Triple H has announced his latest expansion plan. He wants to start NXT Japan sometime this year. With companies like Wrestle-1 & All Japan Pro Wrestling in dire situations, they are likely candidates to be bought out and turned into a WWE developmental program. Fans are furious and surrounding companies are worried, and rightfully so. Their aggressive signing strategy has gutted the United Kingdom wrestling scene, and Japan could be next.
Japanese Promotions Are Suffering Right Now
Currently, Japan is one of the top countries effected by Coronavirus. With even the leading company New Japan Pro Wrestling cancelling weeks worth of planned shows, you can imagine that smaller companies are in a rough spot. Companies like NJPW, Stardom, NOAH, DDT and Dragon Gate are completely fine, as they all have major backing or fanbases. Smaller companies on the other hand, will often be relying on the tour by tour money they can make to keep their doors open. One example of this was Wrestle-1, who often were running shows at a loss.
With many promotions in a weakened state due to simply not being able to run shows and make money, WWE entering the picture with their aggressive tactics will make it near impossible for them to actually compete. This will also make survival hard.
All Japan Pro Wrestling Is Their Last Chance
WWE has been trying to get NXT Japan off the ground for years now. Stardom, Noah and Dragon Gate refused to sell and talks with Big Japan seems to have died out as well. If they can’t get All Japan Pro Wrestling, they will not be able to have an actually stacked roster to make NXT Japan worth it. Sure they can bring people like Shinsuke Nakamura & Asuka to the brand, but they will have nothing but freelancers to work, anyone else will have already been locked down to a major contract.
Will Big Companies Bully WWE Like They’ve Done In The Past
WWE will be a small fish in an ocean of established companies in Japan should NXT Japan happen. We could easily see major promotions like NJPW use similar tactics to that of WWE uses in the United States & Canada. WWE has recently prevented companies like AEW from using certain major arenas. Companies like NJPW will have that type of influence in Japan, and we could see NXT Japan have a hard time getting into major arenas, being left with scraps much like their potential roster.
NXT Japan is a brand which simply doesn’t leave a good taste in anyones mouth. and many feel it’s a huge waste of time and money for WWE. They simply want to grow their monopoly, and people have finally begun to push back on this.
