American actor Lin-Manuel Miranda has spoken out against cancel culture in light of criticism that he has been receiving due to his past work.
American Actor Lin-Manuel Miranda Slams Cancel Culture-‘You’re F—ed.’
Lin, for his part, became embroiled in a controversy when his musical movie ‘In The Heights’ was criticised on the grounds of colourism.
The former is the concept of showing preferential treatment to those who have lighter skin in comparison to those who may be from the same race or ethnic background.
Although he apologized for not including more dark-skinned Latin American actors, he was annoyed by the fact that we are living in a society where everything is becoming increasingly under scrutiny.
During an interview, he said: “For sure. Every time you make a frame, people are going to point out what’s not in the frame.
“And you go, and you make the next thing. That’s all that you can do, keep your head down and keep making s—.” This has had the impact of making people second guess their own beliefs.
Lin is of the opinion that people’s points of view are leading them to become cancelled simply because they have said or done something that does not fit in line with the status quo.
And yet, given that acting is a form of expression, people should be able to say what they think without any restrictions. He added: “People go, yeah, but what about this? And what about this?
“And that’s fair! I do that with art I find lacking. It’s not cancellation. That’s having opinions. So I try to take it in that spirit.”
Nevertheless, the threat of criticism is not holding him back. In fact, Lin has doubled down on his beliefs by doing projects that he feels stay true to his art form. Whether that leads to critically acclaimed success is not at the forefront of his thinking.
After all, it is simply impossible to please everyone. His following comments confirmed as much: “If you get yourself into a place of fear, of ‘What are people going to say about what I write?’
“You’re f—ed. It’s over…you can’t control how the world receives something.” Let us know what you think in the comment section down below. Remember to stay up to date with the latest news on TheOvertimer. Don’t forget to visit Screen Juicer for great videos, news, and gameplay!
