A clash of two heavyweight champions may well be in the future. Only days after UFC heavyweight champ Francis Ngannou demanded boxing’s inclusion in his new UFC contract, the world heavyweight champ Tyson Fury is hitting him back with an intriguing request.
On Twitter, Fury called Ngannou out: ““Who would like to see me fight this beast boxing rules, UFC gloves?” Ngannou replied quickly, offering an alternative.
Tyson Fury Calls Out Francis Ngannou for Boxing Match
“How about MMA rules with boxing gloves? I can do you that favor.” Tyson Fury, never short of a few caustic words, had some advice for Ngannou.
“You want to come into my world calling me and [Deontay Wilder] out to a boxing match? What I can guarantee you would be knocked out and also paid your highest purse to be so! So have a think.”
Francis Ngannou, of course, is set to fight interim champion Ciryl Gane at UFC 270 in a few weeks’ time. Ngannou is nearing the end of his current UFC contracts, and whether he wins or loses, may be looking to make a mark elsewhere in the near future.
Tyson Fury recently annihilated Deontay Wilder in their trilogy fight, dominating the challenger before ending things with a knockout. Fury is undefeated in his 31-fight career and currently holds the WBC, unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring titles.
He is considered one of the greatest living boxers, and by many media outlets to be one of the boxing world’s few lineal champs.
Francis Ngannou, the UFC’s heavyweight champion, actually started his career intending to be a boxer. Ngannou idolized Mike Tyson, and wanted to box like Tyson, taking up the sweet science aged 22.
However, upon his move from his native Cameroon to Paris, France, Ngannou ended up at Fernand Lopez’s MMA Factory, and began training in mixed martial arts.
Ngannou’s mixed martial arts record included twelve knockouts, testament to the champ’s legendary punching power. Ngannou vs Fury lends some legitimacy to the boxing vs MMA fights that have taken pay-per-views by storm in recent years, a weight-appropriate clash between two elite strikers.
Francis Ngannou certainly boasts a stronger boxing pedigree than, say, Ben Askren or Tyron Woodley. The UFC may well attempt to prevent Ngannou from trying his luck in the ring rather than the Octagon, but far stranger things have happened in the world of combat sports.
