Jordan Huie of the Overtimer here with a unique recap today as the vaunted Road To series has made a return, atleast for this week! AEW just uploaded a video hyping up the next episode of AEW Dynamite, a return to the Sears Centre which is already a storied venue for them at this point. Let’s get into it!
We open with a shot of Cody Rhodes doing a sit-down interview, his face still bandaged up. It’s noted that we haven’t really heard comments from him since AEW Full Gear. He’s asked off-screen by an interviewer about his loss to Chris Jericho, and his stipulation that he’ll never again challenge for the AEW World Championship. He doesn’t to answer any questions about either of those right now. He’s then asked about MJF turning on him. To this, he goes silent and look down… a cliffhanger for later.
We shoot to a video recapping the history of AEW and the Sears Centre, of course starting with All-In last year. Noting the plaque of The Young Bucks and Cody that’s now on that building. Cody says you could say that AEW was born in this place. This week they bring AEW Dynamite here for the first time.
Recap of the events of Cody’s feud with Jericho and the stipulation that it will be Cody’s only shot at the world title if he loses. Highlights, with special attention given to Cody injuring himself. This ends with MJF betraying him, and we see MJF’s follow-up promo, and the attack from the debuting Wardlow. We hear from Doc Sampson who speaks on the severity of his injury, the laceration and the rib injury.
Cody speaks on MJF.
He mentions cutting a guy off on the road on the way here and getting flipped off. Says this interaction doesn’t matter because there’s no relationship there, there’s no stakes. The relationship between Max and himself did matter. He knows he should be really angry and he probably deserves a better explanation than he got. Perhaps wouldn’t hear it, knows there’s a lust for revenge and vindication in his heart.
He knows that Max was not a good guy, he was a ‘heel’ but he was his heel. He hand-picked him when no one else wanted him or believed in him… so he feels bad about what will happen. He anticipates being cleared and cleared to wrestle. His last match didn’t go how he wanted to so he’s excited to return to the ring and be able to grab a hot mic and address Max. We’ll go from there.
That was pretty much the crux of it, just focusing entirely on this situation. Still, cool to see a return for this series, even if just a one-off. I’d love for every episode of Dynamite to have something like this. But if you’re just gonna do it for once in a blue moon, the Sears Centre return is as good a week as any to go for it.
One can only imagine yet more fuel will be added to the fire of this Cody/MJF angle this Wednesday.
