Wrestling Universe is a multi-part series investigating the historic Big Egg Wrestling Universe event hosted by All Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling on November 20, 1994, that stands as the highest-grossing wrestling event put together by a women’s wrestling promotion.
The third match of Big Egg Wrestling Universe (Wrestling Universe) saw a championship between one of the least prestigious All Japan Women’s Pro-Wrestling (AJW) take center stage, and was the first of three championship matches during the historic event.
Reigning champion Candy Okutsu of the Japanese Women Pro-Wrestling Project (JWP) promotion defended the title against former champion Rie Tamada. The match only went 8 minutes and 52 seconds, however, the pace made the match feel longer. Everything the women did had exceptional timing, and Tamada led the match with exceptional skill.
The match sets the tone for the rest of Wrestling Universe. The crowd could tell the winner of the contest was always in question, and the stakes were raised with a championship being on the line. After an impactful exchange, Candy would retain her championship finishing a successful v4 defense and her second over Tamada during her reign, having defeated her on March 27, 1994. Candy was just rounding into form during this part of her career and presented herself well at Wrestling Universe. Tamada would go on to move up the card, becoming a solid hand for AJW.
