Wrestling Universe is a multi-part series investigating the historic Big Egg Wrestling Universe event hosted by All Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling on November 20, 1994, that stands as the highest-grossing wrestling event put together by a women’s wrestling promotion.
The seventh match of the historic Big Egg Wrestling Universe event was the second freestyle wrestling contest of the evening featuring “Fighting Queen Bee” Miyuu Yamamoto who at the time was already a two-time freestyle wrestling world championship gold medalist. In 1991 she won the gold at 47kg in Tokyo, and in August of 1994, she would repeat the feat at 50kg in Sofia, Bulgaria.
To this day, Yamamoto is an active Mixed Martial Arts fighter with her last fight happening in December 2019. Her opponent Ana Gomis was also accomplished winning a gold medal in the 1993 freestyle wrestling world championships in Stavern, Norway, and a silver medal at the same weight earlier in 1994. However, Yamamoto quickly showed her quickness being able to take Gomez down and control her on the mat.
Miyuu would show world-class ability throughout the four minutes and would defeat Gomis on points. In 1995, Yamamoto would return to 47kg and win the gold medal at the freestyle wrestling world championships in Moscow, Russia. While Miyuu never made it to the Olympics, she showed amazing when facing another world champion. This is definitely worth watching for those wanting to learn more about amateur wrestling.
