In what seems like the weirdest match in NXT Takeover history on paper, Adam Cole will defend the honour of the brand from the outsider that is Pat McAfee. McAfee has been on preshows and commentary for WWE, but while on commentary for a tag team championship match between Imperium and Undisputed Era, he’d insult Adam Cole who was in earshot. Cole would politely ask him to stop, and things would escalate quickly, ending with Cole being dropped with a punt from the former NFL player.
The challenge would be laid down by Triple H, both men would accept, and Pat McAfee gets to make his professional wrestling debut against the longest reigning NXT Champion in the history of the brand. McAfee has been a lifelong fan of wrestling, once drunkenly bought a wrestling ring, and has limited training. Has he bit off more than he can chew?
Pat McAfee Exceeds Expectations
Cole would send the rest of Undisputed Era to the back, but McAfee had his friends in his corner as an insurance policy. The bell would ring, and McAfee would lock up with Cole and be easily taken into a headlock. He’d have a very hard time breaking this, going for the hair and forcing Cole into the corner.
McAfee would be thrown across the ring, and popover Cole in an impressive display. He’d try this again on the other side, and it’d already be scouted and he’d be inches from a superkick and want a time out. McAfee would apply a headlock, be shoved off and hit a big tackle. He’d hit the ropes again and slip away before he took a pump kick.
McAfee would mock the Undisputed Era at ringside, and the rest of them would show up to back Cole. Security would flood the ringside area, and in the chaos, McAfee would slip to the top rope for a Swanton Bomb. He’d take control in the ring stomping Cole in the corner, something few expected.
Adam Cole Had Enough
McAfee would slow things down with some big strikes, and his ego would be slowly inflated as Cole would be kept down. It would only take a small mistake to ruin this control, but McAfee would hit a body slam and go for a pin, not even getting one. McAfee would go for a simple sleeper, and Cole would try to fight out and have his head slammed into the mat, with a headful of hair helping.
Cole would fight out once again, and be dropped by a dropkick from McAfee, another trick from out of nowhere! The rookie would be doing incredible, Cole was ready to get back into this one after a slap, winning a slugfest, pulling the shirt over McAfee’s head and pummeling him. He’d nail a pump kick, and stomp McAfee in the corner.
The Ushigorishi would drop McAfee for a near fall, before Cole looked for the Last Shot. McAfee dodged and went for a roll up, with Cole getting back up for a Backstabber, getting a near fall. Cole was shocked by this, but had many tricks left to pull out.
Pat McAfee Makes A Mistake
Cole would go to the top rope, but be crotched as McAfee got back to his feet. McAfee went high for a superplex, and would be shoved off the top, doing a moonsault and landing on his feet! Cole was shocked, and McAfee would leap to the top rope and hit a superplex for a near fall!
McAfee would set up for the punt as Cole hung out over the apron, but he’d miss and get the steel steps. His foot would seriously hurt, and Cole would go right for the Figure Four Leg Lock. McAfee tried to roll out, and got closer to the ropes to break the hold, but his time was running out.
Cole would kick him in the face, but in the shuffle the referee would miss a low blow, and McAfee would follow with a lariat, and nail the punt! However, Cole kicked out at two, and McAfee couldn’t believe it. This was his big shot, and it didn’t work. McAfee would go to the top rope, and come down right into a superkick. Cole could have hit the Last Shot, but instead wanted the Panama City Sunrise, nailing it for the win.
McAfee showed just how good an athlete he was in this match, and had solid fundamentals as well. This match showed that Adam Cole is a ring general, and was responsible for this being a great match. Can easily give this one 3.5/5 (*** ½).
