The opening tournament match of G1 Climax 30 Night 7 saw current NEVER Openweight Champion, former IWGP Intercontinental Champion, and Suzuki-Gun leader Minoru Suzuki face the former NEVER Openweight Champion and Bullet Club member, Yujiro.
Yujiro was in desperate need of a win as he started his G1 Climax 30 campaign 0-3 and was coming off a defeat to Suzuki-Gun member Taichi. Yujiro controlled Taichi during most of the match but was unable to seize victory after an underhanded tactic from his adversary.
However, Minoru Suzuki was coming off a victory over former NEVER Openweight Champion Jeff Cobb and wanted to improve his record to 3-1 in the A Block. If Suzuki is to gain another opportunity at the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, his best chance may come through winning G1 Climax 30.
Yujiro started the match by getting into Suzuki’s face, not willing to back down an inch from the current champion. Yet, Suzuki, who has never backed down from a fight, was beyond willing to get physical with Yujiro.
The match had the feel of a NEVER Openweight Championship contest and saw Yujiro hold his own against Suzuki as he fought to show he belonged in G1 Climax competition.
However, Suzuki was able to gain the fall over Yujiro at the 7 minutes and 53 seconds mark after using his Gotch Style Piledriver technique. With the victory and his 3-1 G1 Climax 30 campaign record, Suzuki is stationed perfectly to make a surprising run towards the finals.
Suzuki presents a danger for his opponents going forward and could spoil the tournament for favorites Okada (10/5), Kota Ibushi (10/7), and current Revolution Pro Wrestling (RevPro) Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay (10/10).
