NJPW Announces Field For The 2020 Best Of Super Juniors

The G1 Climax feels like it just concluded, but it is time for another singles tournament in New Japan Pro Wrestling. It’s time for Best Of Super Juniors, a tournament which usually will take place around the spring, with the winner getting a shot at the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at Dominion. With how things got shuffled around this year thanks to COVID-19, the New Japan Cup took it’s spot.

However, with Wrestle Kingdom just over two months away, it’s time for this tournament to get started. It’s smaller than usual, but with a match in the Tokyo Dome on the line? It’s going to be intense.

The Announced Wrestlers For Best Of Super Juniors

Ryusuke Taguchi, Master Wato, SHO, Robbie Eagles, Hiromu Takahashi, BUSHI, El Desperado, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, DOUKI, and IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Taiji Ishimori will make up this tournament. This is a single block tournament, due to the lack of talent available. Whichever two wrestlers have the most points at the end of the tournament will meet again in the finals.

NJPW will usually bring in names from CMLL or ROH to help pad out Best Of Super Juniors, but not this year. Add in names like Ryu Lee, El Phantasmo & Rocky Romero not being around, Tiger Mask not joining, Jushin Liger having retired, YOH being injured and Ospreay & Shingo moving to heavyweight? It’s a rebuilding period for this division.

The only surprise is Robbie Eagles, who has been stuck in Australia since COVID-19 struck, and Master Wato is entering his first BOSJ, the only debuting talent. Despite this, there are going to be a lot of great matches come out of the field, so don’t overlook this. It might not reach the heights of the G1 Climax, but few things can.

It Will Run Alongside The World Tag League

If this tournament’s field doesn’t have you convinced to tune in, don’t forget that it will be running alongside another tournament. World Tag League generally happens in December, but for the first time ever, it will instead run alongside Best Of Super Juniors. They will alternate dates most of the run, but some nights will merge the two major tournaments. We can expect to see the field for the World Tag League announced very soon.
