On December 12th, New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) presented the Super J Cup 2020 tournament. The one-night campaign would crown a new trophy winner the day after former three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, Best of the Super Juniors 25 (BOSJ 25), and Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) member “Time Bomb” Hiromu Takahashi won the BOSJ 27 trophy.
The second opening round match to the single-elimination tournament saw veterans ACH and original NJPW Los Angeles (LA) Dojo graduate TJP go to battle. The two competitors have been teaming together on NJPW Strong as of late, but the two friends drew each other in the opening round of the Super J Cup 2020 campaign.
The veterans showed their experience as the contest was highly technical, with each showing a high level of chain wrestling expertise. The two showed how well they knew each other by utilizing counters and needing to link together strings of offense to bust through their opponents’ defense.
ACH would eventually breakthrough, using his superior strength and speed to get the upper hand over the slightly TJP, but remained immersed in a difficult battle. However, ACH was able to gain the fall at the 9 minutes and 52 seconds mark with his Midnight Star 450 Splash technique to move on and face Chris Bey in the semi-final round.
ACH instantly became the favorite to move on to the Super J Cup 2020 Finals as he matches up well against the far less experienced Chris Bey who had a battle against NJPW LA Dojo Young Lion Clark Connors in his opening round match.
The loss for TJP may be disappointing, but he was able to put on a solid performance that won’t hurt his station with New Japan Pro Wrestling of America (NJoA).
ACH gets back on track to make his return to the main NJPW touring branch and a spot on Wrestle Kingdom 15.
