On December 12th, New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) presented the Super J Cup 2020 tournament. The one-night campaign would crown a new trophy winner the day after former three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, Best of the Super Juniors 25 (BOSJ 25), and Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) member “Time Bomb” Hiromu Takahashi won the BOSJ 27 trophy.
The Finals match of the single-elimination tournament saw Super J Cup 2019 winner and Bullet Club member El Phantasmo (ELP) take on ACH. ELP made it to the finals after a victory over “All Heart” Blake Christian, while ACH defeated former Impact Wrestling X-Division Champion Chris Bey in the semi-finals.
ACH came into the match with a hurt back, yet fought with passion against ELP who was the fresher of the two coming into the finals. However, ELP drew the match to a slower pace as he worked over ACH’s back attempting to slow down the competitor looking for his first trophy within NJPW.
ACH had moments as he fired back against the Bullet Club member, showing how much an opportunity to compete back in the main touring branch within NJPW meant to him. Despite his best efforts, ELP was able to gain the fall at 16 minutes and 11 seconds with his CR2 technique to secure his second straight Super J Cup trophy victory.
After his victory, ELP disrespected the trophy, the golden Super J Cup jacket, and took Hirmou Takahashi up on his offer, saying he wanted to face him at Wrestle Kingdom 15 for an opportunity to face reigning two-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and Bullet Club member “Bone Soldier” Taiji Ishimori.
ACH’s performance on the night showed he remains a threat within the Junior Heavyweight division and put his name in IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship title contention.
