Is Jay White’s NJPW Contract Up At The End Of January 2021?

On January 5th, 2021, there was only one thing stopping Jay White from being named the best professional wrestler in the world today. He failed to win the main event match against Kota Ibushi to claim the IWGP Intercontinental & Heavyweight Championships, but had arguably the best main event match in Tokyo Dome history. Following that up backstage, he would cut one of the best promos of his career, and prove that Jay White isn’t the future, he’s the present.

However, that backstage promo is starting to spread doubt across the wrestling world, as he claimed that after that match, he doesn’t know where he stands in NJPW. This launched much speculation about him being done with the company, and now with the news that his contract might be up at the end of January? Things might get very interesting.

Conflicting Reports On When Jay Whites NJPW Contract Is Up

The news that White’s contract is up at the end of the month comes from Super J-Cast on Twitter, and was believable enough. Previously names like Shinsuke Nakamura, AJ Styles, & Kenny Omega all had their contracts conclude with NJPW in January previously. However, Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer would report that White signed a seven year deal just a few years back.

This falls in line with NJPW really tightening up how they sign their top names after getting Kenny Omega on a one year deal. Jay White has been heavily pushed as one of the top heels in the company, and was a product of the NJPW dojo system, making him a top priority for NJPW to lock down.

Would He Go To WWE?

After the night he had on January 5th, if his contract is up at the end of the month, White is about to be the hottest free agent in the world. WWE & AEW would absolutely want White, and White has a match waiting in NXT. Finn Balor recently put out a tweet asking challengers to step up to him for an NXT World Championship match, and White responded. Balor was the one who brought White into the NJPW system, giving them heavy history.

White would have all the tools to be a mega star in WWE, having a good look, great promo skills, and is insanely great in the ring. However, it all hinges on when his NJPW contract is up, and if he truly feels there is nothing left for him in the company. So, we don’t know what’s actually going on with the contract status of Jay White, but we do know that he’s in for a big year if his start is any indication.
