It has been over 12 months since we last saw Nate Diaz step into the octagon, but a return date for the UFC star could be close after Dana White’s latest comments. The UFC President revealed that he is constant talks with Diaz surrounding his return.
Fans may not need to wait much longer before they learn who he will be stepping into the octagon with next. There are a number of interesting fights that could be made for Diaz’s return, as it looks certain to be one of the biggest events of the year.
UFC News: Diaz Not Fought Since 2019
Diaz hasn’t stepped foot inside the octagon since November 2019, where he was beaten by TKO by Jorge Masvidal. That huge night of action saw Masvidal awarded a symbolic UFC BMF Championship. Diaz has been involved in huge fights throughout his career, and holds a respectable record of 20-12. The 35-year-old is one of the biggest commodities in MMA, as he held the record for the highest-grossing PPV before the record was broken by UFC 229.
There are also questions regarding what weight division Diaz will decide to compete in, as he has fought in both lightweight and welterweight during his career. His two fights against Conor McGregor both came in the welterweight division, but White has teased that he could be set to return to lightweight when he makes his return.
UFC News: Possible Opponents
Fans have been speculating for months regarding the opponent that Diaz will fight when he returns to the octagon. One name that has been ruled out of contention is reportedly Tony Ferguson. White gave very little away when he was talking about potential opponents, but there have been rumours circulating that McGregor could be very interested in a trilogy fight with Diaz should he come through his fight against Dustin Poirier as he expects.
The trilogy fight with McGregor would be a huge UFC event, and would likely only be beaten by a rematch between McGregor and Khabib in terms of interest. Diaz’s biggest win of his career came against the Irishman, as he beat the MMA star by submission in the second round. McGregor gained revenge in the rematch between the fighters, as he won by majority decision. But, there is still a feeling that there is unfinished business to attend to.
