When Finn Balor came back to NXT, he was ready to ride solo. That worked until he became NXT Champion once again, and now has an entire faction wanting his head. Pete Dunne is next in line for a title shot, and he’s got Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch backing him up. They’ve beaten Balor down, and he’s been forced to take some allies.
Undisputed Era are the men he trusts. He’s gone to war with Kyle O’Reilly twice now, so that was his first and only choice when it came to partners for this match with the NXT Tag Team Champions. O’Reilly is a well known tag team specialist, but don’t forget Balor’s time in Japan as part of Apollo 55.
Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch Show Why They’re Champions
Balor would get things started with Lorcan. Lorcan took a shoulder tackle and arm drag before having the arm locked up. O’Reilly got the tag in, as did Burch, who was locked right into a headlock, and then an armbar. Burch was able to attack the recently injured jaw of O’Reilly with a forearm, before tagging in Lorcan for some uppercuts.
A side headlock would be applied by Burch, forcing O’Reilly to fight to his feet. O’Reilly was up to the fight, and countered a scoop slam to tag in Balor. Quick tags in and out from Balor & O’Reilly wore down the arm of Burch, and they were able to take down a charging Lorcan as well before we went to a commercial break.
Through picture-in-picture, we’d see Lorcan & Burch reclaim control of O’Reilly, but as we came back he got the tag to Balor. Lorcan got tripped up and hit with a double stomp, and Burch couldn’t even come in to help his partner.
Kyle O’Reilly Gets The Crucial Counter
Burch ran just enough of a distraction to get Lorcan a chance. Balor would miss a tag, and be beaten down by the NXT Tag Team Champions. He’s not used to being outnumbered in big matches, but that’s what he’s got as he’s isolated.
Burch nailed a big running chop, before tagging in Lorcan to set up the double atomic drop into the russian leg sweep. Lorcan would attack the arm of Balor on the mat, going after that old injury on the right shoulder. Balor got the Pele Kick to get an opening, and it was going to come down to Kyle O’Reilly in this match.
Lorcan did his best to prevent the tag before taking a slingblade, and O’Reilly came in with an array of strikes, just tearing the NXT Tag Team Champions apart. Burch got the worst of it, but kicked O’Reilly right in the jaw multiple times. He’d go for the front missile dropkick, but O’Reilly was able to get a kneebar and force the submission!
Balor & O’Reilly have natural chemistry as both opponents and partners, as shown by this one. They looked natural alongside the NXT Tag Team Champions, and both teams put on an absolute clinic. If Balor wasn’t doing excellent as NXT Champion, he’d really help to elevate the tag team division. Match Rating: 4/5 (****)
After the match, Pete Dunne got some cheap shots on Finn Balor, before he’d just be stomped down by Lorcan, Burch & Dunne. O’Reilly was in no shape to make the save, as Dunne just broke the fingers of Balor. Strong & Cole would hit the ring a bit too late, but were able to prevent any further damage.
