A few weeks back, a new batch of signings was announced for NXT UK. The biggest name was Meiko Satomura, but don’t sleep on the name Bailey Matthews. Originally starting his training in the NJPW Dojo as a Young Lion, but leaving before he was locked down in the counter, the son of William Regal is here in NXT UK. He won’t have an easy win in his debut however, as he faces off with the inaugural NXT UK Champion, Tyler Bate in singles action.
Bailey Matthews Is A Natural
Bate is looking to climb back to the NXT UK Championship, and needed an opponent tonight. NXT UK GM Johnny Saint chose Bailey Matthews for him, who quickly showed his size advantage as he quickly took Bate down to the mat. Bate would have an armbar to break out of, but was able to use his technical prowess to slip out with relative ease.
Matthews would grab the hammerlock again, and applied a head scissor as well to control Bate on the mat. Bate would break out for a second, before ending up back in the hold for another thirty seconds. Matthews would lose control, but he was showing that he can go hold for hold with Bate when it comes to the British Grappling style.
Tyler Bate Survives To Hit The Tyler Driver
He’d win out on another exchange, and grab a cravat before taking Bate to the mat. Bate got up and thought he shoved Matthews off, before taking a shoulder tackle and nearly being caught with the European Clutch. Matthews would nail some tight european uppercuts and a belly to belly suplex, but Bate would come back with some heavy strikes of his own.
Bate would hit an exploder suplex and follow up with the running Shooting Star Press for a near fall. Matthews would have to escape the airplane spin, and nearly got another roll up finish. Bate was rocked with a big european uppercut, but bounced off the ropes with the rolling Liger Kick. Matthews was rocked, and Tyler Driver ‘97 won this one for Bate.
