At AEW Double or Nothing, Christian Cage wlll be in the Casino Battle Royale, as he looks to earn a fast ticket to the AEW World Champion Kenny Omega. However this week on AEW Dynamite, he was given an open contract for anyone to answer. He expected to get a member of Team Taz, but instead it’s Matt Sydal who stepped up. They’ve crossed paths a few times during their time in WWE, most notably the Money In The Bank Ladder Match at Wrestlemania 26, but tonight is their first one on one meeting.
Christian Cage Refuses To Stay Down
They’d lock up in the middle of the ring, and Christian was able to grab a headlock. Sydal shoved him off only to take a shoulder tackle for a one count. Another headlock would be applied, and Sydal was able to counter and get one of his own. Sydal showed his skills with a flying mare, before getting into another lock-up.
Christian was driven into the corner, but slapped the face of Sydal before blocking a springboard moonsault and sending Sydal to the outside. Sydal would be hit with a running dropkick through the ropes, and sent crashing into the barricade. Back in the ring, Christian hit a backbreaker for a two count.
A diving uppercut off the middle rope got another two count, before a chinlock and another backbreaker. Sydal would counter the next attempt of a backbreaker into a flying headscissor, before hitting the rolling solebutt kick. He’d go up top, and manage to fight Christian off before hitting the flying Meteora for a near fall.
A running leg lariat took Christian down into the corner for a double knee strike, before looking for the Lightning Spiral. Christian nailed a quick backbreaker as a counter before telegraphing an attempt at a spear, with Sydal countering into a sunset flip. Sydal applied the Cobra Clutch on the mat, but Christian got the ropes.
Christian went for a crossbody off the top rope, but missed. Sydal looked for a moonsault but Christian dodged and nailed a spear. He’d nail the Killswitch soon after, and this one was over. Christian remains undefeated, with a perfect 3-0 record.
A solid if unremarkable match to kick off this week’s edition of AEW Dynamite. Christian & Sydal are as smooth as workers get, and they shined here tonight in a nice back and forth match, with Christian again proving that he still has the skills that made him a fan favorite. Match Rating: 3/5 (***)
After the match, Ricky Starks came to the stage to distract both Christian & Sydal. Hook, Brian Cage & Powerhouse Hobbs struck from behind. Hangman Page tried to even the odds, and would have the Buckshot Lariat countered by Cage before Hook nailed a chop block. Cage laid Page out with a powerbomb, and Team Taz stood tall.
