When it comes to the world of sports, professional wrestling is the red haired step-child. If NHL or NBA come knocking and want their time slot to show a game, pro wrestling steps aside and takes the slot they’re given. It’s happened to WWE, and now it’s AEW’s turn. The next two episodes of AEW Dynamite will be on Friday Nights, and this could be the worst possible time for this move to happen.
AEW Dynamite Has Been Climbing The TV Ratings Charts
For the past two weeks, AEW Dynamite was able to break one million viewers. This level of consistency is something they’ve strived for, though they didn’t account for the NBA playoffs. They likely already ended the streak yesterday, though numbers aren’t in just yet.
However, it’s due to the NBA playoffs that you won’t find AEW Dynamite in it’s usual Wednesday Night 8PM to 10PM time slot. Instead, AEW is going to have the same time slot but on Friday night, effectively going head to head with WWE Smackdown for two weeks in a row.
Even Worse, It’s The Double Or Nothing Go Home and Fallout Shows
While this situation will always suck, as wrestling fans are creatures of habit, it’s even worse as it’s the shows that directly surround their next PPV, Double Or Nothing. While the entire card has been laid out by AEW, they have one more episode to go, and that’s the first Friday show. With matches like Hangman Page vs. Joey Janela, Miro defending the TNT Championship, a weigh in between Cody Rhodes & Anthony Ogogo and more? They should be able to bring their hardcore fans in, but it’s unclear if casual AEW fans will follow.
Then, their first episode after Double Or Nothing will also be on Friday, which puts a larger gap than ever between an AEW PPV & an episode of Dynamite. We have no clue what AEW could even look like after Double Or Nothing, but they will need to set up a strong card to keep fans interested before finding their way back to Wednesday night.
