Last night at Wrestlemania: Backlash, every proper match delivered on their hype. It was a solid show from top to bottom, if you ignore one glaring match that has divided fans. This was the Lumberjack Match between The Miz & Damien Priest, which didn’t have normal lumberjacks. Instead, it was an ad for Army Of The Dead, complete with zombie lumberjacks.
Chris Jericho Used This As A Chance To Take A Stab Back At WWE
While fans and critics alike took shots at this match, it was a comment from AEW’s Chris Jericho that has caused the most buzz. He would send out a tweet sending the following. “Zombies…ZOMBIES? Wow that just set wrestling back 30 years.”This comes just a few weeks after an unnamed WWE executive called out the AEW Blood & Guts match as doing the same thing, taking the wrestling industry back thirty years.
When it comes down to which one harmed the industry more? You have to go with the campy zombie movie of a match over the violent cagematch which only suffered from a weak ending. Jericho likely only made this comment as a way to stoke the flames, as he loves to do. If he wanted to be accurate, he’d have said this took wrestling back to May 19th, 1990 when Robocop showed up.
Who Were The Zombie Lumberjacks?
When it comes down to the match itself, the ‘zombies’ were wrestlers from NXT & the WWE Performance Center. Eagle eyed viewers recognized a few key names. Jake Atlas was among the hoard, a frequent flier of 205 Live. Cal Bloom, son of Beau Beverly was in there as well. Former CZW World Champion Joe Gacy sadly got to make his WWE debut on this night. Daniel Vidot, Jiro Kuroshio, Asher Hale, and even Scotty ‘Too’ Hotty.
This is similar to situations like CM Punk being involved in a John Cena Wrestlemania entrance, and surely down the line their involvement here will be a fun fact if anyone here goes on to become a major champion.
