Right now, Will Ospreay is the top man in New Japan Pro Wrestling. His rapid rise up the card in the Junior Heavyweight division wasn’t enough for him, and now he’s looking for the title of ace. Winning the 2021 New Japan Cup and then taking down Kota Ibushi got him the newly named IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. However, he wants to be recognized as the best professional wrestler in the world. To do this, he might need to take down Kenny Omega.
Calling Out The Belt Collector, Kenny Omega
While answering questions from fans on Instagram, Will Ospreay made a subtle nudge towards former IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Kenny Omega. Kenny Omega is currently the holder of three recognized world titles, those being the AAA Mega Championship, AEW World Championship, and Impact Wrestling World Championship. Calling himself the belt collector, he’s alluded to having his collection grow.
The question from the fan was in regards to the name of his finisher, The Stormbreaker, just wanting to know if it was actually a reference to a signature weapon of Marvel Comics version of Norse God, Thor.
“Is your technique named Stormbreaker because you like Thor? I like Osprey” was what the fan wrote in. Ospreay responded with the following. “Yes. And it’s the strongest weapon for anyone that is collecting the universe’s most powerful prizes. So Stormbreaker would be the weapon to wipe out any of these collectors.”
With only one man naming himself a belt collector at the moment, it’s very clear who Ospreay means here.
Will Ospreay Would Be Wise To Not Look Past Shingo Takagi & Kazuchika Okada
However, as excellent as a winner takes all contest between Kenny Omega & Will Ospreay would be, Ospreay does need to focus on his upcoming two title defenses first. He will be facing Shingo Takagi on May 5th as part of Night Two of Wrestling Dontaku, and the winner of that match moves on to Wrestle Grand Slam in Tokyo Dome.
That will be when Kazuchika Okada gets his shot to become IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, and would be fine with either Shingo or Ospreay. These are potentially two big matches for Ospreay in May, and he’d be wise to not look past them and towards the belt collector.
Still, even if he loses the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, Omega could still have interest in the RPW Undisputed British Heavyweight Championship. Do you think we will see Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay in 2021? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
