In the opening match of this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, we saw IWGP United States Champion Jon Moxley defend his title for the first time within AEW, as he took on Yuji Nagata of New Japan Pro Wrestling. However, despite the match being fantastic, it’s mainly being talked about for something that happened before the bell rang. Jon Moxley had a unique entrance for this show, with his NJPW entrance video playing, and Wild Thing by The Troggs.
Atsushi Onita Famously Used A Version Of Thing Song As An Entrance
While some will know this song from it’s appearance in the 1989 sports comedy film, Major League, that’s not likely to be where Jon Moxley got this idea from. Instead, it’s better to look towards a legend of Japanese wrestling in his own right. Atsushi Onita is someone that Moxley has modeled a lot of his image around, and one of the most well-known deathmatch wrestlers of all time.
From 1989 onwards, Onita used a remixed version of Wild Thing, including during his iconic entrance in the Tokyo Dome where he took a seat on the ramp to have a smoke as fans threw garbage at him. This is widely considered to be one of the greatest entrances in professional wrestling history, and can be watched here.
Jon Moxley Likely Wanted To Use It For His Exploding Barbed Wire Match With Kenny Omega
Given that this theme was mainly used by a deathmatch legend like Onita, it is likely that this theme was set to be used at AEW Revolution, where Jon Moxley was in a Exploded Barbed Wire match with Kenny Omega. The leading theory is that this theme was simply held up when it comes to usage rights, and finally just became available to Moxley. It would have worked a lot better ahead of the PPV match, but sometimes things just don’t work out.
This is the third example of AEW licensing a song for some top stars, coming after Jungle Boy got Tarzan Boy by Baltimora, and Orange Cassidy got Where Is My Mind by The Pixies. Should Jon Moxley keep coming out to Wild Thing, or do you prefer his normal AEW theme song? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
