Next month on August 13th, we will see the debut of the long rumored “third hour” of AEW on TV. Since September 2019, there has been AEW Dynamite, and while shows like Dark and Dark: Elevation, as well as Being The Elite have expanded their programming? There hasn’t been a proper extra show added. That changes with AEW Rampage, and AEW World Heavyweight Champion/EVP Kenny Omega has a vision for what he wants to see more of on this show.
The AEW Women’s Division Lacks The Spotlight
Ever since the start of Dynamite, they have done an incredible job making the AEW World Heavyweight & World Tag Team Championships feel very important. They truly feel like two of the top championships in the world today, despite their relative youth. However, the AEW World Women’s Championship doesn’t feel the same.
It’s had some fantastic champions in Riho, Nyla Rose, Hikaru Shida and now Britt Baker, but the lack of focus on the Women’s division as a whole on TV is an issue. They get plenty of time on Dark and Dark: Elevation, but not on Dynamite, where we’re lucky to see one or two matches from the women per episode.
Kenny Omega Explains His Hopes For AEW Rampage
While speaking on the Wrestling Observer Radio podcast, Kenny Omega would explain his hopes for the women’s division on Rampage. The relevant section is around the 36 minute mark.
“I think a variation in content is important. The content we’re right now lacking in is our women’s division. I would love to see Rampage be more of a home to women’s wrestling. I want people to see, appreciate and enjoy some of the talent we have to offer and I hope that we can get out and show some of these matches that maybe aren’t seen by enough people. We’ve got a lot of great talent on Dark and people maybe don’t want to watch our YouTube channel and want to watch Dynamite or our TV product and I get that.
I think the extra hour of Rampage, I feel that rather than give them more Chris Jericho, more Kenny Omega, more MJF, I’d rather give them more of the extremely talented individuals that you maybe can’t see that week. Honestly for me, that’s just me speaking on my own personal feelings, I feel that we have a lot of very gifted female wrestlers that have been working really hard, fighting for a spot, maybe it’s time for them to get some more and I think that would count as a variation in content, more women’s wrestling.”
The Debut Episode Is In AEW World Women’s Champion Britt Baker’s Hometown
This is a perfect use of the new show. It would help it stand out from Dynamite, which will help it perhaps grow a unique viewership in addition to the typical AEW fan. AEW has an incredibly talented women’s division, with a lot of talent who is constantly improving. With the debut episode in the hometown of AEW World Women’s Champion Britt Baker, they could get off to a very strong start to this as well. She is currently injured, but a potential match with Shida or Thunder Rosa would be the perfect first main event to fit this new vision.
