The WWE continues to stir up its fair share of controversy, and though it’s mostly self inflicted, others, like Doc Gallows, are coming out and sharing what they’ve seen behind closed doors.
With more and more coming forward and possibly burning any bridge that had with the WWE, it’s getting hard to chalk the comments up to being speculation or disgruntled former employees.
In this case, Impact Wrestling’s Doc Gallows spoke about hearing the WWE wanting to do away with the Indies so they could have full control.
Speaking out
Gallows was on the MCW Cast podcast when he shared what he saw and heard about the WWE’s plans pre-AEW.
“I did hear this, WWE, I know at one point, there was a philosophy, which I hated hearing when I was working, they basically wanted to get rid of all the indies and have everything self produced by them, and this was before AEW had officially launched and that was kind of the plan. Hey, we’re trying to buy Ring of Honor, for example. I don’t know if that’s one of them, but they probably tried. But luckily, these people held up and said no, and then AEW happens and now we’re seeing it’s fruitful for everybody, which is really important because if it’s a monopoly, we all know it’s boring.”
To be honest, this isn’t that hard to believe as a possibility given how the WWE bought up the top talent of other companies for years and proceeded to bury them.
Whether it was meant to keep their competition weak or simply scouting the Indies is a legitimate question.
Return to the territory days
But as Gallows said, thankfully the smaller companies held out and now that AEW has a couple of years under their belts the Indie community has been growing.
We’ve been lucky enough to see the rebirth of a territory like system the WWE had wiped out, and the various companies are working together once more.
With wrestlers free to move around and work with other companies it’s allowed fans to see their favorites against opponents they may not see otherwise.
It’s a phenomenal time to be a wrestling fans because of that, and we’re glad the WWE didn’t get the chance to eliminate the Indies and take this away from us.
What do you think about the WWE trying to do away with the Indies? Should they have tried or left them alone? Let us know in the comments below.
