Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler is no stranger to his mouth creating controversy. On the April 13th, 2020 edition of Monday Night RAW, The King was calling the match between Akira Tozawa and Austin Theory alongside Byron Saxton & Tom Phillips. Tozawa would go for his Diving Senton, which King would call the ‘Ramen Noodle Moonsault’. This comment had fans heated, and it was cut from the Hulu version of Monday Night RAW. Lawler on the latest edition of his podcast, mentioned that being racist was the last thing on his mind when it came to this comment.
Jerry Lawler Blames A Lack Of Chemistry At The Commentary Table
Jerry Lawler has been doing commentary for WWE for decades now, and has worked with many partners, the most iconic being Jim Ross. However, jokes like this came up in 2016 when he worked alongside lead NXT commentator Mauro Ranallo. Due to Ranallo having a past in calling matches in Japan, King would often come up with absurd move names along the lines of the ‘Ramen Noodle Moonsault‘, only for Mauro to correct him and create banter at the table. The direct quote from his podcast is as followed.
“I would say something like, “There’s the Ramen Noodle moonsault” and he would say, “Oh, King! You know there’s no such thing!” and we would just go on. I was doing it just to play devil’s advocate with Mauro. If I were still doing commentary with Michael Cole or JR, we had the chemistry to where each one of those guys would have known that I was almost making a fool out of myself by claiming like I was acting like I knew what this unbelievable looking move was.
“Then either Cole or JR would have said ‘”Oh, King! You know better than that!” With Byron and Tom, we don’t have that chemistry yet. We have only been working together for a short time so when I said that, they didn’t even acknowledge it so it kind of went out and they just kept talking and I kept talking. I didn’t think anything about it either.”
Lawler has not apologized for the comment and remains on the commentary team for Raw at the time of writing. With no consequences being shown, it is safe to say nothing will come of this. Do you think this was a lack of chemistry at the table like Lawler has claimed? Or just him trying to deflect from the issue? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
