At Wrestlemania: Backlash, Rey Mysterio and his son Dominik made WWE history. They became the first ever father-son duo to win tag team championships in WWE. This was an incredible moment for Rey, likely even topping winning the World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestlemania 22. However, Mysterio isn’t ready to let his son don a mask just yet.
Dominik Was Planning To Wear A Mask For His Debut Match Against Seth Rollins
Following their history making title win, they would join Corey Graves on the After The Bell podcast. Dominik would discuss being thrown into the mix, and having his first match with Seth Rollins at Summerslam. “When he first told me that they wanted me to have a match with Seth Rollins at SummerSlam, I thought he was kidding, never in a million years would I have thought that I’d debut at one of the biggest pay per views against the biggest names. It was kind of just like, we had no idea who Dominik Mysterio was and whether I was going to wear the mask. We had this whole plan set up on how I was going to debut, mask, everything but everything happened so fast we just ran with it.”
Obviously, he didn’t end up wearing a mask for that debut, and still remains maskless to this day. Fans have been wondering when he will get that added to his character, as it would help to make him feel more like a Mysterio, but we will have to wait until he earns it. His father is making sure he deserves the mask.
Rey Mysterio Wants Dominik To Earn His Mask
Mysterio discussed this in an appearance on the Not About Wrestling podcast back in February.
“That was the idea from day one when he started training. I said Dom will continue with this legacy and carry it on. We never really had the opportunity to sit down and discuss our plans which now in retrospect we can look at it and say it’s still not too late to make things happen like we had planned out. I think Dom is going to have to earn the mask now. He’s on his way, eventually one day, maybe the mask will be on.”
It will be harder to mask Dominik at this point, as he’s already been showcased heavily by WWE. But if it was up to him earning it, did he do that with the recent victory for the Smackdown Tag Team Championships? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
