Last week, we reported on the possibility that wrestling could come back to Puerto Rico, especially WWC and IWA PR. I wrote that it was a good idea. But, the story at the time was, if the cases kept going down, then a return in August was plausible.
Now, Puerto Rico is experiencing an increase in Covid-19 cases. The island now gets 200 to 300 cases daily. This, in contrast, with the lesser numbers that the island was getting in this past month.
World Wrestling Council (WWC) was supposed to make some adjustments and return mid-August. They were in contact with the Secretary of Sports and Recreation, making sure that all of the safety requirements were met. The return of WWC would have accounted for the return of the International Wrestling Association (IWA PR). But, as we have reported, Savio Vega, who’s the owner of IWA PR, is skeptical about the current situation on the island.
Vega is afraid of the infectious spread that the virus could have. Noticing the daily count of the virus in various states of the United States has made him cancel any return soon.
WWC was working with IWA PR before the virus. The feud was an old one, going back to the last years of the death of IWA PR when Savio Vega brought his roster to WWE Hall of Famer Carlos Colon’s company. The feud never lived up to what it was expected of the two bitter rivals that controlled wrestling in the Caribbean for more than 10 years.
The new feud had fans waiting and anxious. Even La Liga Wrestling, which has been the best wrestling promotion in the last three years on the island, was put aside when the feud appeared. IWA PR had a giant show that brought its biggest crowd this year alone. When it was WWC’s turn, things were canceled, because of the Corona Virus threat.
WWC has been in constant communication with the government during this pandemic, but without IWA PR, they have nothing going for them. The rivalry was the money and the attraction for the summer, it really was going to assure them at least, 2,000 fans. Yet, the Covid-19 pandemic keeps getting worst and the return date further and further.
For now, the Puerto Rican government is waiting to see if this increment keeps getting worse. Business and other services are already open. But, things could change in the next 15 days, when the governor makes more announcements.
