When Matt Cardona first showed up at a Game Changer Wrestling show disguised as Jon Moxley to attack Nick Gage? Fans knew that something special was in the works. This was a man who was the exact opposite of what a company like GCW stands for. They are the outlaws of professional wrestling, indy variety shows that feature just about everything, but rarely anything you’d find in a promotion like WWE.
However, Matt Cardona still showed up and attacked their biggest name. He called himself an ECW original, and would call his shot for the GCW Championship. The only thing that could make him a bigger heel in their eyes is defeating Nick Gage and taking their championship, but surely that wouldn’t happen, right?
Matt Cardona Became The GCW World Champion
Despite barely making it to the ring due to the absolutely rabid fans, Matt Cardona came to fight. It was a bloody affair, as most deathmatches will tend to be, and something wildly out of the usual range of Matt Cardona. If you told people that when Zack Ryder was released from WWE after over a decade on their roster that he’d be in this position and thriving? No one would take it seriously.
However, at the end of this fight, he would be able to raise the GCW World Championship high in the air. He’d barely make it out in one piece, having perplexed Nick Gage through glass among other insane stunts. It took a run in to set up a Code Breaker, but he did it to the shock of the crowd. The match got solid reviews from deathmatch fans.
The Career Restart He Needed
While runs in Impact Wrestling and AEW were able to keep Cardona in the spotlight, he really wasn’t doing anything different. However, this run in GCW has quickly made him one of the most talked about names in the industry. His involvement got GCW Homecoming as a trend on Twitter, and he might be the major name they needed to really get the post-pandemic ball rolling.
This run in GCW could very well be what defines his career more than his years doing very little in WWE. It just goes to show that you never know what will work for someone in wrestling. Cardona could very well be a deathmatch savant.
