The border between Mexico and Guatemala was the site of a break in late September 2022 by the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect Lev Tahor. The Tahor sect has been called an extremist cult and has been the focus of human trafficking allegations.
Over 20 Members of Lev Tahor Sect Overwhelm Guards and Escape Migrant Facility in Mexico
After years of child abuse and kidnapping allegations, Lev Tahor leader Menachem Endel Altar of Jerusalem was arrested on September 23, 2022 on human trafficking and organized crime charges. In the raid, 26 members of the sect were also rounded up.
According to the Times of Israel, those detained in Huixtla, Chiapas were mostly children who managed to push through the facility, climb over a private guard, and onto a truck heading into Guatemala. Authorities did not give chase.
From recent reports, it appears that the Lev Tahor sect attracts legal attention wherever it settles. In the U.S, Canada, and Guatemala, the group has seen charges for human trafficking and child abuse levied.
Currently, its membership sits between 300 and 350.
